        Is Antipolo City safe from different hydro-meteorological hazards? We all know that Antipolo is an elevated area to the point that people coming from low-lying areas keeps moving here in Antipolo. But why do we experienced some hydro-meteorological events such as floods during heavy rainfall when they say that Antipolo is a high place? makes sense isn't it? Because whether we agree with it or not, hydro-meteorological hazard affects our lives and it is really horrendous.Why is Antipolo being connected to this problem? Find out!

What is HYDRO-METEOROLOGICAL HAZARD?

Hydro-meteorological hazard is a natural phenomenon that can be hydrological or oceanographic in nature due to the continuously changing of climate wherein it may cause loss of lives,might acquired some diseases and injury,loss of sustenance and damages of properties and in our environment.

It includes the following that our country already experienced and are still happening here in the Philippines:

• Thunderstorm
• Typhoons
• Coastal storm surges
• Floods or flash floods
• El Niño
• La Niña

This hydro-meteorological conditions can also be the reason why other hazards occur like landslides,wildland fires,epidemics,mudflows and etc.

What are the Hydro-meteorological hazards in Antipolo that people usually experienced?

   Hydro-meteorological hazard is one of the problems that Antipolo City face everytime. During the month of June and July, our country experienced plenty of rainfall because of the thunderstorms or typhoons that enters in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). And when this continuously happens it resulted to flood in an area.

(take note that flood happens when an area that is usually dry gets submerged under water)

But in Antipolo City's case,we experienced this flood because of our wrong practices.We are engaging ourselves to different hydro-meteorological hazards.

El Niño also leaves an impact not only in Antipolo but also in other communities .There are instances that this phenomenon also happens.

For example, when we look at a canal which is a streamline for water waste, we can see that there are no water traces can be seen because of the extreme hot summer time.It also causes the rocks to break due to rises of temperature specifically during Summer so it affects the temperature of a particular place.

Improper Waste Disposal

 This practices also contributes to hydro-meteorological hazards.

People nowadays doesn't care about their  environment as they also lack of discipline when throwing those little tiny pieces of trash everywhere.They didn't think first on what will happen next after throwing those trash in our surroundings.We are making our life difficult. We should be responsible on taking care of our environment.

Trashes that we usually throw near the canal or in streamlines for water waste can causes floods as it can clogged in the canal and so the water waste can't flow easily and when the rain starts to fall continuously, the flood will now invade the specific area.This flood now can damaged our properties and our livelihoods.

 This trashes does not only contributes to flood because we can also acquired different diseases due to this uncleaned environment like dengue coming from mosquito's and  Leptospirosis that is a bacteria coming from the urine of a rat when we try to go through a flooded area with our opened wounds.

People in a community tend to leave those garbages everywhere and that is the first thing that we must not do. Those little things that we've thrown can now make us suffer.

Lack of vegetation

 Trees and plants catch the water that can cause flood but the problem is that trees were being cutted so they can build houses and infrastructures that our community needs. If this happens, flooding may occur.

Because we are in a high place compared to other places, we are prone to landslides.

(take note that landslide refers to the rapid movement of rocks and debris down a slope that causes property destruction or much worst it can kill lives)

  One of the reason why landslide occur is because of our own activities,we cut trees that will keep us safe from landslides and floods. Lack of trees can also contributes to landslide since trees drinks water coming from slow heavy rainfall and roots of the trees helps the soil to bind together.

Mud flows

  Mud can also cause us danger especially when it is on the road. We can notice that after the rain, we can see muds on the road and it will be hard for us to walk there because it is slippery.But we can lessen the effect of this hydrometeorologcal hazard in our community. 

How can we lessen the effects of Hydro-meteorological hazards? 

Here are some of the tips for us to lessen the destructive effects of hydo-meteorological hazard:

1. Learn How to Dispose Our Waste Properly - If we know how to manage and segregate waste properly, we can avoid flood cause by the clogging of trash in the canal.
2. Plant Trees - trees helps the soil to bind together and intercept precipitation.Planting trees has so much use, it helps us also to avoid flood and landslides.Remember that when you cut trees, make sure that you will replace it.
3. Be Knowlegdeable - you need to know what hazards might happen in your area for you to have a disater plans.Having connections outside or with your neighbors are important.
4. Be Prepared - gather all important items that you need to carry like important documents,foods,medicines,flashlight and etc.
5. Be Alert - keep yourself updated from whats happening on the outside world. Watch news.
6. Do not build house in a downward slope area - because it is prone to landslides
